We were delighted to welcome the Minister for Children, Young People and The Promise to our Training Academy in Livingston today as part of Challenge Poverty Week.

Natalie Don-Innes MSP met young people that we’re supporting to identify and take the next step in their lives, learning first hand about the difference being part of The Larder has made to them.

Our approach disrupts the traditional response to poverty, and provides an innovative pathway for young people who may face multiple and complex barriers, to build a range of practical and interpersonal skills.

Participants in our Training Academy in Livingston may be involved in meal deliveries, dining events, and cook and dine classes under the name ‘Catalyst Kitchen’. Our cafes and a bakery also provide a space for trainees to gain work experience, including customer service.

And as a successful, award-winning social enterprise, every penny from every sale is reinvested in supporting young people across West Lothian.

This work is made possible by the award of a substantial grant of £342,110 from the Scottish Government in August 2022, allowing us to build capacity to work with more young people.

The funding supports a number of key priorities including child poverty, mental & physical health, equalities and wellbeing, family support, The Promise (for care experienced people), and fits the framework of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Our CEO Anglea Moohan welcomed Ms Don-Inness and said: “The economic uncertainty and the ongoing cost of living crisis continue to have the greatest impact on the most disadvantaged individuals and communities across Scotland.

“Many people in our community are unable to access their basic human rights, education, food and work.

“We cannot and will not allow this to continue to happen in 21st century Scotland. This funding, thanks to the Scottish Government, will help us continue on this path.”

Natalie Don-Innes said after today’s visit: “The Larder plays a vital role improving the lives of children and families in West Lothian. It's great to see the work done by local organisations like this.

“I can see the impact that funding provided by the Scottish Government is having. It's supporting a fantastic range of services for low income families, including training on employability, life skills, health and wellbeing, all alongside teaching people how to cook.”

You can support our work and enjoy great food at one of our cafes at Blackburn, Broxburn and Livingston. Our brand new online store is also open now at shop.thelarder.org
